Very Good-Excellent overall antique cond: A fantastic American Gothic work. This 1919 dated oil on canvas landscape painting signed H. J. Fataxis, depicts a family congregating in front of their familial home, stiff and standing upright, posing as if to immortalize their life and the home they all inhabited. The painting is strangely static and everything, the figures, trees and people posing in it, appear frozen, as is often seen in still-life paintings. The two brick chimneys on the roof appear to be emitting smoke. Immature, planted trees are seen taking root in the cut grass surrounding the vernacular home. The sea moss colored wood clapboards of the house is trimmed out with white. The wooden doors to the home are painted in orange paint. A wooden swing sits in the interior corner of the home's environs, with the 'L' shaped portion of the home possibly added to the main structure as the family expanded. The work has democratically, evenly dispersed treatment & detail. Outstanding |
