Very Good-Excellent overall vint cond: Offered for your review & consideration is this very intriguing, estate fresh, mid-20th c, post-WWII, lg, figurative O/C portrait of a shirtless young man wearing trousers, signed E. W. Johnson & dated 1958. The painting's in its orig thin profile gold gilt wooden picture frame w/a beaded int slot. The painting shows pencil & painted 'under-drawing,' w/a heavy emphasis on line. The painting's in line w/other works of the same period, most notably by the French artist Bernard Buffet & the American artist Ben Shahn, which also relied heavily on expressive line, giving this period of oil painting the title 'linear art.' The painting, other than the drawn line in semi-transparent black paint, is also very expressive, w/the background being realized in a wonderful, glowing, variegated blue-green, which fluctuates & creates a very active field. The flesh is also nuanced & sensitively painted. 100% untouched. This painting has real presence. Very clean. |
