Clothing is pristine with no stains or tears, and the colors are vivid. The chief's feather is upright and intact! Hair and features are all intact. The chief is about 9 1/2 inches tall from base to the top of the hat; the woman is about 7 inches tall. These have shaped and carved apples for heads. Originally tan or brown in color, over time, the apple oxidizes and turns black. By 1914 demand for the dolls was so high that McAboy shifted to making the heads out of "composition," a material made of sawdust, glue, and sometimes corn starch, resin, or wood flour. Also dating these Skookums as part of the early run is the square perforated printed stamp paper label stating “‘Skookum Indian’ Patented February 17, 1914.” This is a rather rare label used from 1914 and phased out by 1920. |
