HENGE a declension of HESTENG - 'ENCLOSURE FOR KEEPING HORSES' FROM THE DANISH - (Hestengas hence the 'land of people who keep or graze horses') see review of this listing in the Hastings Observer (12th Feb 2021) It also shows the sea state when William landed contrasted with the boats heeling in the channel, the ruins of William's Castle in 1066 @ Hestengceastre. Its base remnant from a Roman fort used by William to land his horses in 1066- the ruin which William would have seen before 1066 when it was also being used to land horses by the 'Hestengs' or 'horse people', from the Danish Hest for horse - 'Marked on a 1778 Yeakell map as Ruins Of Hastings & on a 1798 map, Hastings Observer marked as THE HAULAWAY- the sea having washed both William's fort and its prior Roman fort away -records of Battle Abbey reverting the mound to its original use of unloading at the site. The fort could have existed as an island in a tidal lagoon. Staining in the sky & fading of washes good line detail. |
