Copper - Weight: 5.28 grams Diameter: 20mm -a ridiculously rare coin that was struck right after the battle of Philippi when the local satraps and others in charge of small kingdoms were defecting from Antony and pledging allegiance to Octavian. I have to do more research but I believe this coin was struck right after the battle and right before Antony's death. As such it is an indication of the rapid fall of Mark Antony once he had lost the battle. Other cities and areas did the same - the king of Crete, for example, went from striking siver coins for Antony to Octavian within mere weeks of the battle. The coin illustrates the change in policy from the equal Greek/Roman of Antony to the domination of the West and Rome under Octavian - who was soon to be known as Augustus after his final victory in the same month in Egypt, which finally ended Rome's long period of civil wars and led to the "Pax Augustus." This coin is an incredibly important historical artifact see below. |
